Not quite a good assumption that I'd notice an accidental deletion in time to restore from the external, but its all relative. I'd rather have multiple drives with fault tolerance and an external backup. Quite possible if not likely a unit in a good environment will last much longer. In that case the failure of the nas may have been due to external causes. (the 4x4TB outlived the device in that case) My first 4 bay NAS cost me ~$10 a month over the life of the device (5 years) If you look at the cost over the life of the device, its not as much as it might seem over the lifetime of all the hardware involved. I'd also say the only real downside of multiple bay units is cost. If you need more than 10-14TB of data, you indeed need more than 1 bayĬhecksumming is probably a decent reason for at least a two bay unit.

If you want a disk upgrade you only have to buy one new disk. Restoring the data took a couple of hours but it was very easy to do. I never had disk issues but l bought myself a disk (size) upgrade. I'm still very pleased with it's performance. When one failes I'm sort of obligated to buy a new drive, even when my data is still accessible. Next to that, running 2 disks raises the changes of one of them failing. Not if that redundancy costs me a more expensive nas and double price to get the same volume. I don't care if me and my family can't access the NAS for about 2 days. I don't need redundancy in case of drive failure because I run backups. Redundancy (hardware failure backup) is for continuity. In IT terms there's backup and redundancy.īackup is for disaster recovery and archiving. I never quite understood why multiple disks are so widely preferred in personal use. I would spare myself the expense and choose a single bay NAS (Synology that is).
